County of Niagara Mary Jane Lewis being by me the undersigned Justice duly sworn declares that she is not in any way related to Mary C. Lewis or interested in her application for a Mothers pension on account of the services and death of Wilson L. Starkey who was the son of said Mary C. Lewis and died on the Hospital boat Red Rover on or about the 27th day of July 1862 as she learns while a corporal in Company “C.” 15th Regiment of Illinois volunteers in existing war That although Deponent is not related to said applicant she is intimately acquainted with said applicant and her family and married a son of the Second Husband of said applicant, and has been acquainted with the applicant and said Wilson L. Starkey for over fifteen years. That to Deponents knowledge said applicant was very poor and dependent very much upon her said son for support and she (said applicant) is in poor health and has been for a long time previous to the death of her said son. That Deponent has seen letters in which said son sent his mother money at various times and has seen money so sent. That Deponent knew of said Mothers receiving at one time from said son for her support, in a letter from him which is in his own handwriting and dated Dated Camp near Otterville Dec 12th 1861 the sum of five dollars. That, at another time and as she believes in the year 1861 she saw a twenty dollar bill sent by said Wilson L. Starkey to said Mother for her support, and she learned from various sources that during the year 1861 said son sent by letter to his said mother for her support the sum of ten dollars at one time and eight dollars at another time but did not see the money when it was received. That she has seen letters from said son promising to assist said mother as she needed for her support and one letter from said son to said Mother which stated in effect that in case of his death he wished said mother to have his property. And stated the amount due him from a Mr. Stone of Rockford in the state of Illinois which he wished paid said mother by Mr. Stone aforesaid: That Deponent has also seen a letter from the Second Auditor in The United States Treasury Department sent with a Certificate for the bounty and pay due said Mother on account of the services and death of her said son. That Deponent read letters from said son received up to the time of his death and from her acquaintance with him and from said letters learns he was not married, after the death of his wife which was one year previous to his death or more than one year. That from her acquaintance she also learned said Wilson had no child at the time of his death, and all amounts here stated was after said Wilson L. Starkey left the state of New York. Mary Jane Lewis State of New York County of Niagara Personally appeared the above named Mary Jane Lewis and being by me duly sworn declares she has {cannot read} the foregoing affidavit read and knows the contents thereof and the same is true of her own knowledge except the matters therein stated on information and belief and as to those matters she believes it to be true and I certify that statements of said Mary Jane Lewis entitled to full credit and I am not interested herein and the foregoing affidavit was sworn to and subscribed before me April 14th 1864.
