Contains part of Wilson L Starkey last letter 25 Jan 1868
I only received this page in the pension packet. It appears to be a part of a larger affidavit.

Either Jean Belbutowski, a cousin, or someone in her family years ago obtained a small pension packet that only contained about 8 pages. This page was included in that packet, but this page was not found in the full pension packet I ordered. I think this page, William W. Reed’s affidavit, is the first page of the above affidavit, titled “Contains part of Wilson L. Starkey’s last letter”. The reason I believe this is because the above appears to be part of an affidavit made by William W. Reed.
William W. Reed being duly sworn declares he has seen a requisition of Additional Evidence relative to claim described in annexed papers.
That he has been intimately acquainted with Mary C. Lewis Daniel G. Lewis and with Wilson L. Starkey therein described for more than Sixteen years and “is not related to the claimant: that he is well acquainted with the means of support of said Mary C. Lewis and her present husband said Daniel G. Lewis: That they are in destitute circumstances and unable to procure the necessary means of support, and that said Wilson L. Starkey previous to his death at various times to the knowledge of Deponent contributed to the support of said Mary C. Lewis who was his mother. That about one year and a half before leaving the state of New York being about seven years ago he commenced to labor for Deponent and continued to labor for Deponent and to live in the family with him for most of the time until he left the state of New York That during the time he so labored, he contributed his wages to the support of his Mother and her family except what he expended for his own support and he materially aided in the support of his mother. That after leaving the state being about five years since Deponent paid said Mother the sum of ten dollars and a box of goods containing one piece of factory cloth, two dress patterns. Some Linen cloth Needles Thread & other articles of Dry Goods were delivered her by Deponent which were the property of said Wilson L. Starkey and was so paid & delivered to his mother by his directions That Deponent is acquainted with his hand writing and has seen a letter from him to said Mother in his genuine hand {end of page} |
